Moab utv trail FAQ
The 6.5-mile (10.4-kilometer) Hell’s Revenge Trail is a high-intensity off-roading track made famous by obstacles with names such as Hell’s Gate and Tip-Over Challenge. The trail is extremely demanding, so if you don’t have the right vehicle or adequate off-roading experience, it’s best experienced on a guided tour.
Here are some items that we recommend keeping on hand any time you hit the trails.

PERSONAL ITEMS

MUST-HAVES
-Off-road GPS Map and/or compass
Extras
-Camera (+charger/battery)
-First aid kit
-ID/drivers license
-Money/credit cards

Additional safety tips to further protect yourself when riding on a UTV:
- Motorcycle helmet: Head injuries can be very serious and lead to long-term permanent damage. Motorcycle helmets can help prevent and reduce the risk of these injuries.
- Eye protection: All passengers are at risk of airborne debris on the road — whether it is a random object (bug, bird, baseball, etc), or pebbles kicked up from the vehicle in front of yours. Airborne objects can hit your eyes and cause damage and distractions.
- Gloves: Good quality off-road / motorcycle gloves give you better traction when controlling the steering wheel. They also provide extra protection against cuts and scratches.
- Boots: Similar to gloves, boots provide extra protection against cuts and scratches.
- LED Headlights: Lights help keep others aware of your vehicle, and they help you see better.
- Flags: Adding tall flags is a cheap way to help increase your visibility.
Moab’s experience the thrill and beauty of rolling sandstone landscapes and the breathtaking vistas of the Sand Flats Recreation Area. Never driven a UTV before? No problem! Our skilled and knowledgeable guides will lead the way and share wonders of our desert and reveal remains of ancient dwellers. This is a Moab don’t miss for your bucket list!
The Hell’s Revenge trail starts with a terrifying (yet exhilarating) climb up the fin of rock appropriately called the Devil’s Backbone. You navigate slowly up the path that is marked by the years of rubber turning the rock black. On both sides of the UTV, a quick glance to the left OR the right reveals a sheer cliff. Again, both terrifying and exhilarating!
After the harrowing experience climbing the fin, our tour guide stopped the group to make sure everyone was okay and to let us know we just got passed the scariest part of the trail. He gave us all ice cold water from a cooler on the back of one of the UTVs and led us down a little path. There he showed us real dinosaur footprints in the rock! A quick splash of water on the rock and they appeared like magic. It’s strange to imagine dinosaurs have walked in the same place that you are currently standing. It makes you wonder what this place looked like millions of years ago. We headed back to the UTVs to continue our journey down Hell’s Revenge Trail.
This being a fairly well-traveled trail, it was clearly marked where to go. There are arrows painted on the rock to keep people on the path. Make sure you don’t follow the mountain bike trails instead which are marked with dotted lines. The rubber tracks from UTV tires are also a clear indicator of where to drive. Also, we learned that it is extremely important to stay on the designated trails to preserve the land as best as possible. If there wasn’t a trail the entire hill would probably be painted black with the rubber from tires of UTV, quad, and Jeep.
Trail Overview
Difficult, long, but very scenic and exciting, this is one of the most popular trails near Moab. Hell’s Revenge intertwines with the Slickrock Bike Trail, so be very careful at crosspoints. Bikers have the right of way. Sand Flat Recreation Area has a small fee.
Difficulty
Difficult. The main trail features several large ledges that can’t be bypassed, but most of the difficulty comes from numerous narrow steep sections along slickrock fins. Optional extreme obstacles Hell’s Gate, Mickey’s Hot Tub, the Escalator and Tip-Over Challenge are dangerous and should only be attempted by expert drivers using an experienced spotter. For these obstacles, front and rear lockers are required. Major vehicle damage is not unusual. It is extremely dangerous to ride an ATV on this trail without a helmet. Stay on marked route at all times.
History
When Dan Mick came to Moab in 1973, Hell’s Revenge didn’t have a name. He and friend George Schultz named the trail while driving it on one particularly hot day. George was the first president of the Red Rock 4-Wheelers and Dan was the second (1986-88). Mickey’s Hot Tub got its name because Dan was the first to drive it. Dan knows all the obstacles extremely well, so I had a great spotter when I drove the tricky Escalator in 2007.
